About Elafonissi Natura 2000 Habitat Protection Area

The Elafonissi Natura 2000 Habitat Protection Area is located on the southwestern coast of Crete, Greece. Covering an expanse that includes Elafonissi Island and its surrounding shallow lagoon, this protected area safeguards important coastal dune systems, wetland habitats, and Mediterranean shrublands. The region is characterized by its striking pink sand beaches formed by crushed shells and coral, crystal-clear shallow waters, and endemic plant communities adapted to the coastal environment. Ecologically, Elafonissi supports a diverse array of wildlife, including rare and migratory bird species that use the wetlands as feeding and nesting grounds. Its dunes and sandy shores form vital nesting areas for endangered sea turtles like the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta). Historically, the area has been important to local communities for fishing and traditional uses dating back centuries, but today it is managed with a focus on conservation and sustainable tourism. Visitors are drawn to Elafonissi not only for its stunning beachscape but for the chance to experience a fragile habitat where terrestrial meets marine ecosystems. Popular activities in the area include walking the sandy shores, exploring shallow lagoons by foot, birdwatching in the wetland zones, and snorkeling in the clear waters. The area is also a model site within the European Natura 2000 network, aimed at preserving valuable natural habitats and species under EU directives. Careful environmental management balances public access with habitat protection, making Elafonissi a vital refuge for wildlife and a treasured destination for eco-conscious travelers.
